There are several ways to supplement the learning process when you are attempting to learn Italian as a second language. While classes, guidebooks or learning software are obviously imperative, there are many games and entertaining ways to enjoy the learning process that can improve your vocabulary retention and love of the language. Many of these also provide a practical bent for the language, removing it from the theoretical world of the classroom.

Learn Italian through the Arts and Everyday Objects
Italian is one of the languages that pervade our vocabulary as English-speakers. In our cuisine, our music and our artwork, the Italian language is virtually everywhere. By examining those areas closer, we can expand our Italian vocabulary time and again.

Did you know that many of the different cuts of pasta are named for actual Italian objects? Penne, the thick short pasta, means “pen.” Farfalle, the name for the pasta that looks like a butterfly, actually means “butterfly.”

Every time you encounter an English word of Italian derivation, take a second glance and figure out what the actual Italian meaning is. As you learn more about these Italian-English phrases, it will enable you to learn Italian that much easier. And you can enjoy a good dinner or two while you learn Italian!
