10 good reasons to learn Italian
Why are so many people learning Italian today? Despite the political and economic importance of other languages, the number of people learning this language is growing. The most common motivation is cultural enrichment, followed by studying, work, tourism, and the reasons can also be emotional. Oh yes, amore…. It is known that Italians are charming and new loves are often born while traveling, so when I ask: “Why did you decide to learn Italian?” the answer is often: “Love”… But not only love for a person, but also love for Italian culture, food, art, fashion, nature, music.
1. PRONUNCIATION
Let’s start with the first motivation, which is primarily pragmatic. The pronunciation of the Italian language is simple and musical. There are clear rules and once you learn and practice them, they will delight you with their musical rhythm. Intonation may take a little longer, but as you learn the vocabulary, the intonation will fall into place.
2. SIMILARITIES WITH OTHER LANGUAGES
When learning Italian, you will immediately notice the similarities with other languages. Most people today speak English because it is taught in primary and secondary schools. If you speak English, learning Italian will be much easier than expected. About 30% of English words come from Latin. We often come across new words in class, but it is thanks to English that we can understand their meaning. The Italian language is most similar to Latin, which laid the foundation for the development of Romance languages. Knowing another Romance language can certainly help us, but be careful! It can also hinder us. It is quite normal to hear Spanish or French words being inserted into the conversation in class in the hope that they will pass because all these languages are very similar. But that is not always the case… Let’s say you are in Spain and you need butter, and you don’t know how to say it in Spanish, so you try to find help in Italian and ask for burro. A Spaniard will surely look at you strangely and think to himself, “How can he get you a donkey?” This is just one example of identical words, but completely different meanings.
3. GESTICULATION
Verbal communication is the main way of communication, but non-verbal communication is also a very important factor. It is used to express all our feelings and attitudes. In learning the Italian language, this way of communication is very important. Italians very often will not express their feelings and attitudes verbally, but simply with a gesture, movement or facial expression that may not mean anything to us, but they could certainly communicate for a few minutes with just gestures and convey a whole range of messages. That is why it is very important to learn various gestures when learning the Italian language, so when we say that in Italy we will communicate with both our hands and feet, then it may really be successful. In any case, you will have a lot of fun and exercise while learning to gesture like real Italians.
4. FOOD
It is impossible to learn Italian without mentioning food. Did you know that the Italian language has the largest number of adjectives used to describe food? They simply love good food, and we must admit that Italian cuisine is truly famous all over the world. There are many restaurants that offer Italian specialties, and understanding them sometimes requires us to look for help in a dictionary. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to enrich your vocabulary and order a dish with confidence? You may not even need to go to a restaurant because during the class you will learn how to prepare various dishes and you will embark on a culinary adventure yourself and choose a recipe from the sea of Italian specialties that you will fully understand and turn into a delicious dinner.
5. CULTURE AND TOURISM
We all love traveling and we certainly have a bucket list of destinations that we would like to visit at least once in our lives, and at least one of those destinations is certainly located in Italy. The probability that you will have the opportunity to visit Italy is high because Italy is very close. After all, Italy is one of the main tourist destinations in the world. Everyone wants to visit Rome, Venice, Tuscany or Cinque Terre and we agree that it is absolutely worth walking the streets of Rome and throwing a coin in the Trevi Fountain, taking a gondola ride through the canals of Venice singing “O sole mio” or immersing yourself in the history of the Renaissance city of the Medici family. However, this magical peninsula has many more hidden gems. According to the UNESCO list, the largest part of cultural heritage is located in Italy. With as many as 53 cultural and natural landmarks, it makes up about 5% of the total world heritage. The fairy-tale village of Alberobello and its white trulli houses will surely win you over. The town of Matera is located in the Basilicata region and is believed to be the site of the oldest human settlement in Italy. It is characterized by the way houses are built that seem to be dug into rocks or caves. This is the destination Mel Gibson chose to film the popular film “The Passion”. This town was declared the European Capital of Culture in 2019. And who wouldn’t like to take a romantic selfie with the colorful, beautiful houses of the town of Positano on sharp cliffs right by the sea in the background? Discovering a new culture also means discovering a new language. Knowing the Italian language will certainly make your stay easier and you will be able to relax and enjoy it more. It will be easier for you to understand signs, guides, instructions, explanations and warnings. Gather your courage, reach for your knowledge of the Italian language and order an espresso in Italian or ask how much those beautiful shoes cost, put on a smile and you will see that your effort will be worth it. Italians are honored by the fact that foreigners speak their language and they certainly prefer your Italian to English because, let’s face it, communication won’t always be successful.
6. CINEMA
Life is beautiful! And life will be even more beautiful when you learn Italian and can watch this wonderful film without the need for subtitles. We know that Italians speak very quickly and are difficult to understand, so we will still have to invest a little more time in learning the Italian language to reach a level of knowledge for which we no longer need subtitles. But it doesn’t matter… In the meantime, we can enjoy the sea of films that Italian cinema has to offer. By 2013, Italian films had won 13 Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film and are almost at the top of the list. Neorealism introduced us to famous directors such as Visconti, Rossellini and De Sica. In the 1960s, the genre called spaghetti western was watched, and then the 1980s and 1990s came when the famous Federico Fellini, Bernardo Bertolucci and Roberto Benigni came on the scene. Film is a very powerful medium, so why not combine the pleasant with the useful and improve our language skills with Italian films?
7. LITERATURE
Italy boasts a large number of writers who are among the most famous in the world. Dante, Petrarca, Boccaccio, Pirandello, Eco and Goldoni are just some of the names that everyone has heard of. And even today, our shelves make room for some contemporary writers such as the mystery writer Elena Ferrante. The question always arises: “Which is better? The book or the movie?” Most people always say that it is better to read the book and then watch the movie. But it is even better to read the book in the original. Reading and listening are two skills that are very important in learning a foreign language. Of course, we do not expect you to start reading The Divine Comedy in the original. Italian literature is so rich that you will definitely find something to your taste.
8. FASHION
The days of taking buses to Trieste to do your seasonal shopping may be over, but Italy has always been a destination for all those who love fashion. Italy is number one in the world thanks to its creativity, tradition and style. As soon as we mention Italy, one of the first associations is fashion. It is recognizable all over the world and has a great influence on the economy of this country. The center of fashion is certainly Milan, and cities like Rome and Florence are not far behind. If you love high fashion, be sure to visit the most famous streets such as Via Montenapoleone in Milan, Via Condotti in Rome or Via Tornabuoni in Florence. These shops may not be for everyone’s pocket, but we can at least take a look and enjoy the luxurious window displays. Every major city in Italy offers a wide range of clothes and footwear. Why limit yourself to just looking at the window displays because we don’t dare to ask for a larger shoe size, a smaller trouser size or simply prefer a different color? If you are learning Italian, you will be able to talk to the saleswoman and ask for help. As we said, English will often not be of any help to us.
9. MUSIC
Italian is a musical language in itself, but it is also the language of music. The most famous operas are written in Italian. However, music is generally the key to better learning and acquiring a language and good results can be achieved, and it is also fun. Music will not only help you enrich your vocabulary, but it will also help you remember expressions and grammatical structures better. How many times have you heard a song and hummed it all day because it got stuck in your head and you can’t get it out of your head. It may sound tiring, but it works! Eros Ramazzotti, Zucchero, Laura Pausini or Andrea Bocelli are not the only singers. Italian will also help you enrich your playlist while you are humming in the shower or driving a car, and maybe you will finally be able to sing a song from beginning to end without a mistake!
10. JOB
And finally… Job! While everyone is packing their bags for Germany or Ireland, and you are still persistent and have hope for a better tomorrow, try to improve your CV by adding Italian to the languages you speak. It may not be necessary to go to Italy, as many Italians come to Croatia as tourists. Italian can often be heard on the streets and squares of our beautiful country, so you might try your hand at tourism or hospitality. Italian is also in demand in medicine and dentistry. Namely, there has been a growth in dental tourism, which is why Italians often combine business with pleasure, stopping by on their way to the seaside and getting a real makeover at affordable prices!
