Where to start learning Italian?
Do you want to be at ease with the Italian language? Not sure where to start? Are you looking for inspiration? You’ve come to the right place, because we’ve prepared a list of suggestions for you on how to get started.
Check if you already know it
- popular words – if you’re a typical coffee drinker, you’ve certainly happened to order a cappuccino at least once in your life. On the other hand, as a pasta lover, you know perfectly well how to make pasta al dente and probably distinguish penne from farfalle,
- links to Romance languages – you will easily pick up the word cantare if you know its French equivalent chanter. You’ll learn even more from Spanish, where words can be deceptively similar to Italian (pensar / pensare), and sometimes even identical (madre / madre; padre / padre),
- famous songs – singing under your breath counts too. Every time you echo the performer, you “speak” Italian.
Discover the meaning of gestures
- Perfetto! – A positive gesture that means something is perfect. To make it, you join your thumb and index finger together in a circle while making a quick hand movement in a horizontal line.
- Cosa dici? – a characteristic gesture expressing disbelief, irritation, nervousness. We link our fingers together and bend the wrist toward the body. This is accompanied by a sweeping shake of the hand.
- Che buono! – a gesture by which we say that we like something. To do this, we bring our index finger close to our face and make a movement as if we were screwing it into our cheek.
Get used to the language
- YouTube channels – preferably those for beginners, where the speech is slow, but with the correct Italian accent. E.g. Sgrammaticando,
- movies – use Polish subtitles and avoid movies with voiceovers if you care about picking up the accent. Explore the classics of Italian cinema: “Malena” (starring Monica Bellucci) or ‘Life is Beautiful’ directed by Robert Benigni (an Oscar-winning film). If you prefer light subject matter, aim for comedies. You may be interested in the popular comedy-drama titled. “Lying Well in Pleasant Company” from 2016.
Look for a “guide”
- Italian language enthusiasts – thanks to them you will absorb the Italian atmosphere. They will share with you their impressions of a recent trip to Tuscany or a tried-and-true recipe for an Italian dish. They may not be the best Italian language experts, but they won’t let you forget Italian!
- Native speakers – even if you don’t have much experience in speaking Italian, don’t shy away from their company. They will not let you get bored.
- Teachers/lecturers – they combine both functions mentioned above. They are inspirers and professionals.
Learn with passion
- Fashion – let your imagination run wild and move into the exclusive world of Gucci, Versace and Armani. Arrange with your friends, just meet online. Have everyone dress up as some famous Italian or Italian woman. Don’t forget to incorporate Italian vocabulary .
- Food – choose an Italian restaurant and order something to go. Be sure to use Italian nomenclature
- Sports – add Italian athletes to your collection. Learn not only about their greatest achievements, but also about their lifestyles. Who knows, maybe one of them will inspire you?
