Italian is one of the languages that pervade our vocabulary as English-speakers. In our cuisine, our music and our artwork, the Italian language is virtually everywhere. By examining those areas closer, we can expand our Italian vocabulary time and again.
Did you know that many of the different cuts of pasta are named for actual Italian objects? Penne, the thick short pasta, means “pen.” Farfalle, the name for the pasta that looks like a butterfly, actually means “butterfly.”
Every time you encounter an English word of Italian derivation, take a second glance and figure out what the actual Italian meaning is.
